In the game, Max Payne is a cop who has been brainwashed to be on a revenge mission against the people who killed his wife.
The game is set in a future New York City in which the population has been nearly wiped out by a biological weapon. This has created a society controlled by criminals. Max is hired to take down the criminal organization that is behind the assassination. The story is told through cutscenes with voice acting, as well as a few text boxes and a journal. The game is considered a more serious version of the popular Max Payne comic book series.
Storyline
The story begins in a New York City subway. A woman was murdered by a pair of hitmen, and a bomb went off. Max Payne is there to investigate.
Max arrives at the scene of the crime, and sees a man named Carlos. He questions Carlos, but Carlos begins to get agitated. Max takes a gun from Carlos, and a train comes in, and Max and Carlos run.
On their way, they pass a homeless woman, Lianne. She gives Max a flower and tells him she will be waiting. They continue their way. A man named Henry is following them. He gives Max a knife and tells him to get the gun. Max gets the gun and the knife, and Henry turns himself in.
Max meets with the Commissioner, and she tells him that Lianne is the daughter of the head of the gang. Max is sent to a mental institution called New York State Psychiatric Institute.
In the Institute, Max sees a man named Dr. Kleb, who tells Max that his wife, Mona, is dead. Kleb then uses a device that puts Max to sleep.
Max wakes up in a room with a man who says his name is Mr. Rojas. He tells Max that he is making a film about Max, and says that he is going to kill him. Mr. Rojas then kills Mr. Kleb with a gun that he tells Max is his own. He puts a gun to Max’s head and tells him he is going to kill him. Mr. Rojas asks Max if he is scared, to which Max replies “yes”. Mr. Rojas says “good”.
Max is then put into an airtight container for transport. He is then strapped to a gurney and a machine is attached to his head. The machine goes off, and Mr. Rojas tells Max that he is going to play a song for him. He plays “I Can’t Wait” by the band Rage Against the Machine.
After the song, Max Payne sees the outside world, and is shocked when he sees what it has become.
Gameplay
The gameplay is very similar to that of the first game, Max Payne. The game is controlled by a four-way joystick, and there is a pause menu that allows the player to choose how they want to play.
In the game, the player can get through the game in a number of ways.
One way to get the game done is to go through each level one by one, as the game gives the player a certain number of lives to use.
The player can also buy items from vendors as they go through the stages.
There are many different weapons to use, with some being more powerful than others. The player has access to his entire arsenal.
There are also different levels, with the player starting in the sewers and working their way up to the top of the world.
There are many side missions in the game, some that are optional and some that are mandatory.
